Why We Love the Trucking Industry (And You Should, Too!)

The trucking industry is one of the most valuable industries in the world. The fact is that truckers play a critical role in the supply chain and without them, many of the daily items we depend on would not be delivered in a timely manner. Without all of the components of this particular industry, our country would come to a halt. However, people are on-the-go and tend to forget the industry’s importance and why it is so great. By eliminating common misperceptions and informing others on all of its perks, the general public can learn to love the trucking industry just as much as those within the industry do.

Providing the Things We Need

One of the main reasons to love the trucking industry is that truck drivers bring the things the public depends on every day–food, clothes, supplies for your home and job, and everything in between! In addition, a recent article in Forbes says the trucking industry is improving industry sales growth. In 2013, trucking company sales were up by almost seven percent from 2012, indicating that more companies are shipping products domestically, a sign of an improving economy. The American Trucking Association says that big trucks carry more than two-thirds of the tonnage shipped in the United States.

Employment Opportunities

In recent years, the trucking industry has reported a driver shortage. The average age of commercial drivers is 55, not far from retirement age, which indicates the shortage could grow over the next few years. For this reason, employment opportunities for those who enter the commercial trucking industry are far better than many other employment outlooks. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, trucking jobs are expected to grow by 11 percent over the next decade, mainly because the economy is expected to grow and the need for goods will also grow. It would be a smart, profitable move to begin a career in an industry that has a strong need and that’s expected to grow!

The Open Road

For many who enter the trucking industry, the thought of life on the open road is enticing. It is true that many truck drivers spend long periods away from home, but they also enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Imagine traveling along a mountain road, enjoying breathtaking views while getting paid to do so. Truckers are often people who enjoy working independently and with solitude, enjoying the time in the cab of a truck. There’s no worrying with multiple co-workers hovering over them. This gives drivers a sense of happiness and freedom. Many drivers enjoy meeting new people in small towns where they deliver, as well. Traveling through various towns they also have an opportunity to experience different foods along the way. Working as a truck driver is unlike any other occupation.

One of the reasons drivers love the trucking industry is for the salary and benefits. For example, Smith Transport offers a base pay plus:
