No Barrier to Success at Smith

The trucking industry is one of the largest in the country, and it is consistently evolving. It seems drivers can’t go more than a day or so without hearing more news about the advent of driverless trucks and other technological advances. But while those are long off, one advancement (both loved and not-so-loved) is almost upon us. We’re talking E-Logs.

Known in their longer form as electronic logging devices, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has mandated that carriers and independent drivers begin using E-logs by the end of this year. The devices tap into the vehicle’s engine in order to record the use of the truck, and therefore monitor whether or not drivers are complying with the maximum of eleven hours on the road each day. Safety is the name of the game here, as the regulators expect E-Log systems to reduce accidents by nearly 2,000 a year – and deaths by more than two-dozen.

There’s not much doubt that updating from paper logs to electronic records is likely to reduce fatigued driving and make our roads safer, but not every trucker is excited about the perceived intrusion. Many are concerned E-logs will mean reduced pay, reduced miles, and an increased temptation to drive unsafely in those available hours.

Luckily, we are proud to report that these concerns just haven’t quite materialized here at Smith Transport. We have been completely compliant with the upcoming mandate for the past three years, and most of our drivers are still reaching their target mileage numbers. So much so, that they are earning significant bonuses as a result. We’re proud of that.

As other carriers scramble to become compliant and risk jostling drivers’ schedules to get there, we’re already cruising in the fast lane. With all of our E-Log issues resolved, Smith Transport is poised to continue providing our drivers with excellent miles, work-life balance, and steady paychecks – all at a company that’s employee-owned.

Does that sound good to you?

Stay safe and keep on truckin’!

I was skeptical of the E log system at first, but after I learned it I like it. No more doing paper logs….which took a lot of my valuable extra time…and at the end of the work day, just enter I approve these logs….Done!
